Uninsurable Health Risks - Addison's Disease
Also known as: Adrenal insufficiency, Adrenocortical hypofunction, Hypocortisolism

Your adrenal glands make hormones that help your body respond to stress and regulate your blood pressure and water and salt balance. Addison's disease occurs if the adrenal glands don't make enough of the hormone cortisol, and often insufficient levels of aldosterone as well.

Symptoms include weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue that gets worse over time, low blood pressure and or patchy or dark skin.

It can occur at any age but is most common in people ages 30 - 50.  Without treatment Addison's Disease can be fatal.  Treatments can include hormone replacement therapy and you should carry an ID card stating your condition and what medicines you take and how much you need in an emergency.

The adjective "Addisonian" is used for features of the condition, as well as patients with Addison's disease.  President John F. Kennedy is probably the best known Addison's Disease sufferer.
